DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Board of Commissioners is the general governing body of the county. The law provides that the Board of Commissioners "has and shall exercise the responsibility of developing and directing the fiscal policy of the county government."

The second major function of the Board of Commissioners is to further the public interest by regulating private conduct through local laws known as ordinances. The other two forms of formal action that may be taken by the board are orders (or motions) and resolutions.

The Board of Commissioners is responsible for: establishing the general personnel policy for county employees, such as compensation, fringe benefits, vacation and sick leave; managing the county's property, making decisions concerning the acquisition and disposition of major assets; making appointments to various county boards and agencies'; provision of public services and determining the organizational framework through which the services and programs will be operated; and plan for the county's future.
