DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

All of the records in the Office of the Register of Deeds, except certain health information on birth certificates, are public records.

As custodians and managers of large numbers of public records, registers of deeds are subject to many laws governing the care and maintenance of these records and the access to them. These laws apply to all public officers keeping public records but especially concern registers of deeds because good recordkeeping is central to almost all aspects of registers of deeds responsibilities.

Any person may examine a public record at reasonable times under the supervision of the register of deeds.

These records may include, but are not limited to , deeds, deeds of trust, right of ways, leases, agreements, birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates, military discharges and issuance of marriage licenses.
