Department Overview
The Mitchell County Sanitation Department has four recycling convenience centers located throughout the county. These centers accept household trash and recyclable materials such as glass, aluminum, newspaper, mixed paper, cardboard, and plastic milk and soft drink containers. The centers also accept white goods (appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, washers, and dryers), electronics, pesticide containers, tires, and metals.
Mitchell County encourages recycling.An attendant staffs each center during operation hours. Please see the attendant if you have questions or need help.
In addition to the four recycling convenience centers, the department operates a mobile unit that travels to five different locations in the county. The mobile unit attendant can accept household trash, newspaper, mixed paper, cardboard, glass, aluminum cans, and plastic containers.
Altered Schedules for Convenience Centers & Mobile Units
CONVENIENCE CENTERS
The convenience centers in Altapass, Bakersville, Buladean and Red Hill are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from March 1 to October 31 and from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from November 1 to February 28 each year.
MOBILE UNIT
The mobile unit will be open from 12:00-6:00 p.m. March 1 to October 31 and from 12:00-5:00 p.m. November 1 to February 28 each year.
The moile unit visits schedule is as follows:
- Mondays, Little Switzerland
- Tuesdays, Glen Ayre
- Wednesdays, Cane Creek
- Thursdays, Estatoe
- Fridays, Poplar
- Saturdays, Glen Ayre

The Sanitation Department observes the following Holidays:
