The Tips Line is an answering service that takes both anonymous and non-anonymous tips concerning drugs and other crimes.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The purpose of the Mitchell County Sheriff's Department is to serve the citizens of Mitchell County. Deputies respond to calls concerning a variety of topics, including:

  • domestic violence
  • assaults
  • breaking and enterings and larcenies to both businesses and to residences
  • intoxicated drivers and pedestrians
  • shoplifters
  • vehicle lock-outs
  • stranded motorists
  • automobile accidents
  • overdue motorists
  • license checks
  • burglar alarms
  • traffic violations
  • funeral escorts
  • commitments (involuntary)
  • suspicious persons armed and unarmed

The department also serves civil process, including subpoenas, warrants, civil summons, show cause orders, writs, executions, custody orders, domestic violence orders, juvenile summons, notice of hearings, etc.

The department also has a D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program at Bowman, Buladean, Harris and Tipton Hill Schools for students in the 5th grade. The program teaches kids how to resist drugs and avoid violence. The officers teaching in this program are Tony Lominac. All of these officers are highly educated in the D.A.R.E. program.

SPECIAL INFORMATION (GUN PERMITS)

The Administrative Division of the department issues gun permits and concealed gun permits. The cost of gun permits are $5.00 each and are good for 5 years. This permit is ONLY for purchasing a firearm. Concealed handgun permits are $90.00 and are good for 4 years. They must be renewed. The permit allows its owner to carry a weapon concealed except for businesses and other places that have a posted sign saying no concealed handguns. At the time of application, there is a 90 day waiting period before the permit is issued.
