Department Overview
The missiin of the Mitchell County Department of Social Services is to provide assistance and services to all eligible citizens of Mitchell County in a timely, efficient manner within the confines of state regulations and North Carolina General Statutes.
Based on the principle that society and this agency have a vested interest in the individual while providing assistance and services in a respectful, compassionate manner enabling each to retain their dignity, self respect and self-sufficiency. The department pledges its best efforts to improve effectiveness and efficiency in all programs, to improve staff morale and community awareness of the needs of the department and the clients that are served.

Units of Mitchell County DSS
- Administrative Unit (Supervisor Cathy Craigo, extension 327)
This unit is responsible for reception duties, office supporty, and the Energy Assistance Program - Income Maintenance Unit (Supervisor Pam Lawing, extension 331)
This unit is responsible for administering food and nutrition services, adult and children's Medicaid, and first family assistance - Children's Services Unit (Supervisor Shawn Burleson, extension 312)
This unit is responsible for children's protective services and foster care services, day care services, foster home licensing, adoption and links services are also provided by children's social workers. Child support services are provided by Tammy Potter (extensioin 305). - Adult Services Unit (Supervisor Paula Holtsclaw, extension 319)
This unit is responsible for adult protective services, guardianship, Medicaid transportation, licensing of family care homes and the CAP/DA program.
