Department Overview
The Tax Assessor’s Office is responsible for listing, appraising, and assessing both real and personal property in accordance with North Carolina laws. Applications for tax relief, exemption, exclusion, and Present Use Value are administered by the Tax Assessor’s Office. Laws governing operations within the tax office are contained in a group of statutes known as the Machinery Act of North Carolina, these laws apply to all counties statewide. The Tax Assessor serves as custodian of multiple public records that are used by realtors, attorneys, surveyors, financial institutions, other county offices, and the general public. Our mission is to provide service to the people of Mitchell County in a professional, friendly, and courteous manner while promoting fairness and equity of valuation.
Important Information
As per G.S. 105-307 the listing period is the month of January unless extended by the Board of County Commissioners. Any change to real estate or personal property that is subject to taxation is to be listed by the taxpayer during this time. Taxable personal property includes but is not limited to: business assets, untagged motor vehicles, boats, personal watercraft, untagged campers, untagged trailers, mobile homes, and aircraft. Anyone who fails to list property during the regular listing period will be subject to a 10% penalty.
Important Dates for the 2010 Year
- January 1, 2010- Day as which value, ownership, and situs of real and personal property are determined for ad valorem tax purposes.
- January 4, 2010- Transferred from Thursday, January 1. First day of the regular listing period. Listing period expires January 31 unless governing board extends the period.
- January 15, 2010- Last day for the operators of mobile home parks, marinas, and aircraft storage facilities to make required ownership reports to county assessor.
- January 31, 2010- Last day of the regular listing period; last day to make applications for exemption, exclusion, or present use value program; except for elderly and disabled exclusion, homestead circuit breaker, and disabled veterans exclusion.
- April 15, 2010- Last day of listing period for those persons who were granted an extension.
- June 1, 2010- Last day to make application for elderly and disabled exclusion, homestead circuit breaker, and disabled veteran exclusion.
- September 1, 2010- Current year taxes become due.
- January 6, 2011- Unpaid 2010 taxes become delinquent and are subject to interest charges.
